We know everything we do is being watched, tracked, filed and compiled. As we become increasingly numb to this violation of privacy, powerful organizations are cashing in on how best to exploit this information. It's no longer just the government we have to worry about, but the corporations. Mining data is the new Gold Rush, and whoever can analyze it fastest and most efficiently gets the crown. In Syn:Fin, brilliant software engineer Jim Harrison has a knack for doing just that. His skill lands him a position with the US government and its anti-terrorism efforts. The result is Stonehenge, the ultimate supercomputer capable of sorting an unthinkable amount of digital data and organizing it into neat little files that tell the story of every individual on the grid. And being completely off the grid is only possible for someone with an acute knowledge of exactly what is being tracked. Someone like Jim. When he realizes the danger in what he has helped create, morality gets the better of him and he... well, he breaks Stonehenge, or rather disables it, before going underground. But now people are looking for him, and he needs to find out why before the people he cares about end up hurt.
Syn:Fin is a fast-paced and compelling chase through the back alleys of technological warfare and the "gangsters" who run it. This is the best and most frightening kind of science fiction, the kind that hits so close to home, you consider packing up and relocating to a deep, dark cave in some country no ones ever heard of. Gentry is incredibly knowledgeable (without writing over our heads), consistently engaging, and hilarious. And thank god for his sense of humor. You'll need an occasional laugh to ease your nerves. An absolute page turner.

SynFin Jerry Gentry 9781450562362 Books Reviews
This is a SIX star story. The quality of the writing easily rates FIVE stars. However, the edition I read had apparently not been copy-edited nor proof-read. This diminished the pleasure in the reading. Imagine "puisant" in place of "pissant" and "passed" for "past." As one doesn't love the child dressed and polished for a party any less for turning up scratched, smuged and muddy, I still look forward to more works from this master storyteller - wordsmith.
It took me a while to get around to reading this book. It sat on my for longer than normal and I kept getting to it "soon." What a stupid thing to do, in retrospect, because I loved this book. The techno aspect was just fascinating. It was like the best of near future sci-fi, which I love, combined with the thrill of knowing that this could really be happening right now and wondering if maybe it is...
There's a great voice to this one. Really sharp and smart and a bit smartassed. The main character's a tech geek with some real balls and an attitude, but it's the kind that makes you like him and root for him from the beginning.
The characters are diverse alright, from several different cultures which plays beautifully into the unfolding action and intrigue. The tech detail is there but not in infodumps or dry monologues. Honestly, if you have a smartphone and you like it, you'll probably get and really enjoy this book.
The writer reading this did want to object to a few of his choices, mostly being downright ballsy with POV in a way I think honestly worked but probably wouldn't have gotten past most trad-pub editors. But that's the beauty of self-pub, isn't it? A very nice thing to find is that it was beautifully proofread. Oh, it wasn't perfect, but there were no more occasional typos than you would find in any book put out by a traditional publisher.
It was a great read, really. I hear there's another one coming from Jerry before too awfully long. I'll be looking forward to it.
This book was fun, interesting, and also a learning experience. The author takes us to a disturbing world behind the interenet and technology in general, which affects all of us. I like a good mystery combined with multiple levels of conspiracy, and this book delivers. It also made me wonder how much of what transpires in the story is, or has already taken place. I hope there will be a follow up book, I would welcome more. This is a great start for a new author!
THIS BOOK GRABBED MY INTEREST IN THE FIRST FEW PAGES AND THE INTEREST STAYED WITH ME TILL THE END OF THE BOOK. I WANT TO READ MORE OF HIS BOOKS. HE KEPT THE CHARACTERS INTERESTING, LIKE KEEPING SEVERAL BALLS IN THE AIR AT ONE TIME. PERFECT BOOK FOR MY KINDLE.
Absolutely loved SYNFIN!!! Jerry L. Gentry pulled a new idea out of nowhere, and made it one hell of a thrill ride. Very refreshing and enjoyable, and very hard to put down.
SYN FIN is a gripping adventure, moving at a brisk clip with snappy dialog, engaging characters, and many layers of technological intrigue. The plot revolves around Project Stonehenge--a sophisticated computer system built by the government to monitor terrorist activity. Jim Harrison, the protagonist, a gifted computer scientist, worked on the project but also sabotaged it. The start of the story finds him after he's been on the run for awhile, hiding out, and potentially about to be uncovered by his enemies, but what they don't know is that he's using their technology to monitor them...
I love to read...I love to read scifi, mystery, fantasy and a whole host of other genres but in the sci fi space I must say that Mr. Gentry has created and out of the box winner. I found his mixture of technology, science, IT, Music, Electronics, Government conspiracy and general intrigue a huge success. Much like Simon R Green, Jim Butcher and heck even JD Robb or John G Hartness, Jon F Merz and others Gentry weaves a story that captures from the beginning and doesn't let you go till the end; Good news for me (or bad) is that it took three hours because of my voracious appetite. In any event yes pick up the or other electronic version or even a paper back since it will be well worth your time spent. I look forward to more in the series and other productions from Gentry for some time to come. Enjoy the ride....
